English (ENG) 100: Choosing a Section What is ENG 100? Composition I is an introduction to the rhetorical, conceptual and stylistic demands of writing at the university level. It is designed to prepare you for your required Writing Intensive (W) Focus courses by giving you guided practice in writing for various purposes and audiences. You will be drawing from a variety of sources (including print and online) in refining and expressing your own ideas. In the process, you will develop important skills in information literacy, including advanced search strategies, critical evaluation of information, and appropriate ways to incorporate outside sources into your own writing. Your peers and instructor will help you plan, draft, critique, revise, and edit. Expect to compose at least 5,000 words of finished prose (20 typewritten pages). (Note: If you feel you already possess the experience and skills identified in the above description, you can attempt to fulfill this requirement through the collection option.)   What are the different types of ENG 100 sections?  In all sections of ENG 100, you will work with an instructor who will guide you and support you across various stages of writing, giving you feedback on what you have written and helping you to become an effective critic of your own and others' writing. But because at UHM we recognize how time-intensive it can be to learn how to write well, and because we recognize that not everyone learns in the same way, we also offer supplemental support for you in ENG 100 that extends beyond your regular work with the instructor. Specifically, we provide three different kinds of support that you should consider in relation to your own learning style and needs: In tutored sections, assistance is provided for those students who wish to receive additional help with their writing inside and outside of their English 100 class. Trained writing tutors are advanced undergraduates who work with you one-on-one (and sometimes in small groups) during the invention, planning, drafting, editing, revising and polishing stages of your writing. These tutors are accomplished writers, most of them English or Education majors, who are being trained for this work in a 400-level course in writing instruction. Tutors can help you identify your strengths and weaknesses as writers, as well as help you to improve and build upon them throughout the course of the semester.  Tutors will be present at many class meetings (though usually not all), allowing them to become familiar with the instructor and his/her assignments and expectations.  Thus, tutors will also be able to help you to make sense of your assignments and understand what is expected of you at the college level. In mentored sections, you have a similar opportunity to receive additional individualized feedback on your writing. Mentors are graduate students in English who attend all classes alongside you and meet with you regularly outside of class in individual conferences. As graduate students, many of these mentors are preparing themselves for teaching college composition, too, and they work closely with the course instructor to supplement her or his work.  They will coach you on your writing and they will assist you with other challenges you might be facing in English 100 during your first year. Mentors can help ease your transition to college by getting to know you on an individual level, by connecting you with campus resources, and by discussing strategies for being a successful college student.  Particularly if you are the first one in your family to attend college or if you are just looking for some extra advice, a mentored section will provide you with lots of support. In sections that do not have either a mentor or a tutor, the instructor is the primary source of support who will help you to plan, draft, critique, revise, and edit your written work. Nonetheless, you will be able to seek additional assistance at a tutoring center for ENG 100 students, wherein you can work on an appointment basis with experienced writing coaches who have previously served as in-class tutors and are highly familiar with the routines of ENG 100.   Note as well the collection option, which offers accomplished writers the opportunity to earn 3 credits for ENG 100 by submitting a collection of their writing.    Please read the statements below, as well as the section descriptions (what each instructor plans to do in his/her section of ENG 100), to choose the ENG 100 section that is best for you.   ENG 100 with a tutor   ENG 100 with a mentor may include sections of ENG 100A ENG 100 without a tutor or mentor If you agree with most of these statements, register for an ENG 100 section with a tutor: ·  I am interested in improving as a writer, and I am willing to meet with a tutor periodically if such a need is identified by me or by my instructor.·  ·  I want to work with an experienced undergraduate who has been in my shoes and taken ENG 100 at UHM. ·  I would prefer it if the tutor I work with has some involvement in the ENG 100 section I am taking. ·  I would prefer to be able to work with the same tutor throughout the semester. If you agree with most of these  statements, register for an ENG 100 section with a mentor (marked in Class Availability): ·  I am interested in improving as a writer, and I am willing to meet with a mentor at least 3-6 times outside of class. ·  I want to work with an experienced graduate student who can help me get adjusted to a new place while I am also getting adjusted to a new level of writing. ·  I would appreciate a mentor who can help me see how the writing in English can prepare me for the Writing Intensive (W) Focus courses I'll be taking later. ·  I am interested in developing an e-portfolio of my writing and/or learning more about how writing relates to my academic and professional goals.   If you agree with most of these statements, register for an ENG 100 section without a tutor or mentor: ·  I am interested in improving as a writer, and I am willing to meet with a Writing Center tutor periodically if such a need is identified by me or by my instructor.·  ·  I would be happy to work with an experienced undergraduate who has been in my shoes and taken ENG 100 at UHM; however, I do not feel the need to have that person involved in my ENG 100 section. ·  I would prefer to be able to sign up for appointments with different tutors throughout the semester, as I sometimes may not "fit" well with one or another.
