Fulfilling the Foundations-Written Communication Requirement
The University of Hawai'i at Mānoa has a
one-semester Foundations-Written Communication (FW) requirement as part
of its General Education Core. Undergraduates fulfill this requirement
by earning credit for one of these four first-year writing courses:
- English 100
- English 100A
- English 101 + English 101L
- English Language Institute 100 (for non-native speakers of
English)
Choose the box below which fits your situation to learn how you will
satisfy the Foundations-Written Communication (FW) requirement.
|
If you have Advanced Placement or transfer
credit* for ENG 100 or ELI 100, the FW requirement is satisfied.
No UHM course needed.
Advanced Placement credit:
A score of “4” or “5” on the
Language &
Composition Advanced
Placement Exam is equivalent to UHM's ENG 100 course.
Transfer credit: If you passed a
course at another college that is officially equivalent to UHM’s
ENG 100 or ELI 100, you have satisfied the FW requirement.
nbsp;
Please note that AP or
transfer credit for a literature course does
not fulfill the FW
requirement. Similarly, transfer students who had a
writing-course requirement waived at their former school have
not automatically fulfilled UHM’s FW requirement.
Steps to take:
For AP credit: Have your AP scores
sent to the UHM Admissions Office for processing.
For transfer credit: Have an
official transcript sent to the UHM Admissions Office for
evaluation of transfer credit. When you receive your University
of Hawai'i System Transfer Report, confirm that you have credit for ENG
100 or ELI 100. (Visit the Mānoa Advising Center or a college adviser if you have questions.)
* Check AP/transfer credit by
logging into
MyUH, clicking on “STAR Degree Check,” and viewing a report
from the "Transcripts" tab. (Information should be available approximately
8 weeks after your tuition deposit is submitted.) You will also be
sent a “University of Hawai‘i
System—Transfer Report.”

If you do not have
credit for ENG 100 or ELI 100, an FW course is
required. Placement into an FW course is determined
by one of the
following:
A. Students with high SAT or ACT
scores: The Collection Option
Students will be
offered the
chance to earn credit for and exemption from ENG/ELI 100 if
they scored:
- 680 or higher on SAT Writing and 680 or higher on
SAT Critical Reading
OR
- 30 or higher on ACT "English/Writing Combined" and 30 or higher on ACT
Reading.
[ACT test takers: UHM requires the Writing
section if you took the ACT in February 2005 or later. The
"English/Writing Combined" score is given in the "Plus Writing
Scores" section on the results sheet that ACT sent to you.]
Students who took the SAT or the ACT prior to
February 2005 must have
- an SAT Verbal score of 680 or higher
OR
- an ACT English score of 30 or higher and
an ACT Reading score of 30 or higher.
Steps to take:
1. Have your SAT or ACT scores
sent to UHM. A letter with details about the collection will be
sent to you.
2. Review the invitation
letter that is mailed to you. (If you do not receive a
letter, inquire at the Mānoa
Writing Program, mwp@hawaii.edu
or 956-6660). Letters are generally sent in January, May and
September.
3. After reviewing the letter,
decide whether you will (a) submit a collection of writing or
(b) register for an FW course.
3(a). To submit a collection:
follow directions on the invitation letter. Your collection will be reviewed by faculty
members. They will decide if your collection earns you three credits for the course
or if you will have to take the course. 3(b). To take an FW
course, register for any open section of ENG 100 (native
speakers of English) or ELI 100 (non-native speakers of
English). Non-native speakers of
English who have attended school in an English-speaking country
for 6 or more years should register for ENG 100. Other
non-native speakers of English should refer to section D for
more information. You may also contact the Honors program
(956-8391,
honors@hawaii.edu) to inquire
about taking the English 100A Honors course.

B. Native Speakers of English with ACT, SAT, or
COMPASS Scores
Native speakers of English are placed into ENG 100* or ENG
101/101L based on their test scores (SAT, ACT, COMPASS, or Manoa
Writing Placement Exam). Placement is available one week
prior to students' scheduled registration appointment time.
Both placement and test scores can be viewed by doing the
following:
-Log in to
MyUH.
-Click on STAR Degree Check/View Transcript (then log in if needed).
-Click on the Transcripts tab.
-Look under “General Tests.” Students
with SAT, ACT, and/or COMPASS scores will have a Manoa
English FW Placement score.
-You register for ENG 100 if your Manoa English FW
Placement score is 100.
Register for ENG 101 and ENG 101L if your Manoa English FW
Placement score is 101.
* Students with ENG 100 placement may be eligible to register
for ENG 100A. Contact the Honors Program (956-8391,
honors@hawaii.edu)for details.
Students whose test scores do not appear in
MyUH should have their official test scores sent to UHM.
Students who have test scores but do not have a Manoa English
FW Placement score should email mwp@hawaii.edu
with details of the problem (include name, UH Number, and test scores that
appear in MyUH).
C. Native Speakers of English without Test Scores
Native speakers of English who
do not have SAT, ACT, or COMPASS test scores are placed using
alternative placement methods.

D. Non-Native Speakers of English
Non-native speakers who need to take the
English Language Institute (ELI) writing test are placed into
ELI 073 or ELI 100 based on the test results. Non-native
speakers who are
exempt from the ELI (click on "Clearance of ELI
Requirements" in the sidebar) are placed into ELI 100, ENG 100,
or ENG 101+ENG 101L based on the following:
-
Students who are
exempt from the ELI because they attended school for 6 years
or more in the U.S., Australia, Canada (except Quebec),
Ireland, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom are placed as
described in the “Native Speakers of English” sections (see
“B” and "C" above).
-
Students who are exempt from the ELI based on other
exemption criteria are
placed into ELI 100.
