Transfer students can visit the
Admissions Office Transfer Credit Search page to check if a course they completed at another college is equivalent to UH Mānoa's ENG 100,
ENG 200, or ELI 100. Students who have transfer credit for one of these courses do not
take an FW course at UHM.
(2) WRITING-INTENSIVE (W) FOCUS COURSESBecause writing helps students both to learn and to communicate, the University requires students to take writing-intensive courses. Small writing-intensive classes, in which instructors work with students on writing related to course topics, are offered in nearly all departments. Students are strongly encouraged to complete ENG 100, ENG 100A, ENG 190, or ELI 100 before they enroll in W courses.
Requirement If you entered the UH system prior to 1990, an academic advisor can determine the number of W classes you are required to take. Transfer students have a pro-rated requirement. See the chart below. NOTE: "Transfer student" refers to a student who took classes at a non-University of Hawai‘i campus and who is starting at UHM with credits from another school. Therefore, students who took classes at a UH community college, UH West O‘ahu, or UH Hilo are not considered "transfer" students in this context.
